Died on a ride, #2, 2008

A 53-year-old Waterloo real estate agent and businessman is the Region's first cycling fatality in several years.
Nick Nardella was riding home on his electric-assist bicycle at around 11 a.m. yesterday when he collided with a recycling truck just metres from his driveway.
It appears he was passing the truck on its left. During the pickup portion of their run, recycling trucks typically are controlled from the right-hand position. Police noted that Nardella was not wearing a helmet, although it is difficult to see how having a helmet would have helped him.
The Record report on the accident suggested that the reduced visibility due to high snow banks have concerned residents in the area, but again, it is hard to see how that would have factored in to this accident.
